Purpose: Paradoxical embolism through a patent foramen ovale (PFO) is a well known risk factor for recurrent thromboembolic events. We report the results of transcatheter PFO closure for paradoxical embolism using the PFO Amplazter¨Þ Device.
Methods: Since 2003, total 7 patients who had been treated at the department of neurology with PFO and at least 1 cryptogenic transient ischemic attack or cerebrovascular accident were selected. All patients underwent percutaneous PFO closure using PFO Amplatzer¨Þ Device assisted by transesophageal echocardiography under general anesthesia.
Results: The implantation procedure was successful in all 7 patients. Peri-interventional complication was only transient ST-segment elevation in one case. During mean 9 month(range from 1 to 19 months) follow up, no recurrent thromboembolic events and no residual shunt through PFO were observed.
Conclusion: Percutaneous PFO closure with the PFO Amplatzer¨Þ Device appears to be a reliable technique in the prevention of recurrent systemic thromboembolism in patients with a history of cryptogenic ischemic attack and PFO. Further study is needed to identify patients who are most likely to benefit from this intervention.
